    Welcome from Principal Collins

I’d like to welcome you to Arbor Heights Elementary School! Arbor Heights is a K-5 school located in West Seattle, Washington. We are a friendly community who take great pride in celebrating a strong partnership between the students, staff, parents, and community members which support and enhance the learning opportunities of every student in our school!

Currently, Arbor Heights serves about 353 students. We have a dedicated staff and an active parent volunteer network that support student learning in many ways. Arbor Heights is an exceptional school in which learning thrives due to this strong community partnership!

It is a pleasure to serve as principal of Arbor Heights Elementary School. This is my second year as principal of Arbor Heights Elementary School. The opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children has been a passion of mine since I was a young child growing up in a small town just outside of Portland, Oregon.

I have been fortunate to share my passion for educating children through my work with students, staff, parents, as well as the members in a nearby district for over 30 years. I received my undergraduate degree in special education from Western Washington University. I attended the University of Washington for graduate school where I received a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I received a second Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Principal Certification from Western Washington University. I recently sold my home in Leavenworth and look forward to spending more time here in beautiful West Seattle on the weekends! I treasure reading and time with friends as well as, watching sporting events, gardening, hiking, and cooking.

Arbor Heights Elementary School is committed to offering a challenging and supportive school program for all of our kindergarten through fifth grade students. Our continuing goal is to prepare students with the vital knowledge and skills they will need for success, while at the same time encouraging creativity, curiosity, and a life-long appreciation for learning.

The academic program at Arbor Heights reflects state and curricular frameworks as well as district adopted standards in the core curricular areas of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. We are also implementing both the visual arts standards and the physical education/ health standards through specialized instruction by credentialed teachers in those areas. These district standards are closely aligned with state academic standards. We believe learning is a journey. Students progress through their journey at different paces. The district wide MAP testing program is one measure that we use at Arbor Heights to gauge the progress of our students in their journey. In addition to the MAP tests, teachers use a variety of other assessment tools in the classroom, including reading level tests, writing portfolios, research projects and the state classroom based assessments for fourth grade food science, fifth grade social studies and fifth grade physical education. The results from the aforementioned assessments are used to differentiate the instruction for individual students to ensure we meet them where they are and guide them forward in their learning.

Character education is a high priority at Arbor Heights. We look forward to initiating a process in early 2013 to define how to best meet the emotional and social needs of our students through a well-vetted curriculum to support character development. Our goal is to develop the needed character traits in children to be successful in school and life. These include: responsibility, compassion, self-discipline, honesty, respect, and integrity.

We are deeply proud of the partnerships we have with our Arbor Heights’ Families and our community. The commitment of our community to work together to support and enhance the learning experience of ALL students is evident when you visit our school. Parents volunteer on a regular basis in classrooms, the office and for special programs. Our Parent Teacher Association plays a vital role in this partnership.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to support our students in their journey as learners.

Again, I extend to you a very warm welcome to the Arbor Heights Elementary School community. If you’re a visitor, take a look around our website and get to know us a bit. If you’re a parent or neighbor, I’ll see you the next time you’re in the building. And if you’re a student, always remember how very proud I am to be your principal!

    Warm regards,
    Christy Collins
